Born: 1936

Artist biography: Florida artist Roberta Marks was one of the 1980s masters of pit fired ceramics.
She combined this technique with painting on the pot once the piece was fired. She is now an
established painter and sculptor with a studio in the Keys and shows extensively throughout Florida.
Born in Savannah, Georgia she studied at the University of Florida, Gainesville; University of Miami,
Coral Gables, Florida; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Art Center, Miami, Florida; and
Penland School of Crafts, Penland, North Carolina.

Description: Large pot with matte, unglazed surface in browns and blacks. Many small pits and
marks in the surface, which are inherent to the process. The bottom has a round, bulbous bottom on a
small foot. T he pot narrows at the waist and then flares out into a conical neck.
