Fran Sentell, who served as the Museum bookkeeper for ten years, recently retired. We will miss her outstanding service; she will continue to advise and assist her replacement, Martha McCloskey, who comes to SAMFA after twenty-one years with the Tom Green County Library. The Museum welcomes Martha to the staff.
Director Howard Taylor serves on the Board of Directors of
the American Association of Museums. He attended the winter board meeting
which was held at the beautiful Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida.
He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Center for the Advancement
and Study of Early Texas Art (CASETA). He is chairing the Strategic Planning
Committee for that organization. CASETA has organized important symposiums
and supported exhibits and education programs to create a greater awareness
of the rich artistic legacy of our state. A number of those exhibits and
programs have occurred at our Museum in San Angelo. If you are interested
in learning more about this organization contact Courtney DiSabato at 512-245-1986.
Wednesday,
September 11, 2007, staff members from SAMFA joined three other arts organizations
in hosting the Chamber of Commerce luncheon held at Angelo State University.
Lorie Cantu of the San Angelo Cultural Affairs Council (SACAC) gave an inspiring
speech about the importance of the arts in our community, followed by a
couple of gift bag give-a-ways, and then Dr. Joseph Rallo, the new President
of Angelo State University, spoke about the future of the university. Pictured

September 23 - 25, 2007, Jade Norris and Joy Noguess attended
the Second Annual Pachyderm Conference in Dallas. Guess again, having nothing
to do with politics, "Pachyderm" is an easy-to-use multimedia
web authoring tool which enables institutions like SAMFA to "tell stories
digitally." The conference brought together museum and campus leaders,
trustees, and educators for a series of dialogs with Pachyderm authors,
developers, and many others to discuss the outreach and
programmatic
use of Pachyderm in museums and institutions of higher education. To learn
more about the Edward and Betty Marcus Digital Education Project for Texas
Art Museums and their partner in crime the New Media Consortium, be sure
to visit pachyderm.org and nmc.org . In the future you can expect to see
a parade of pachyderm presentations across the SAMFA website including the
Art of Devotion, a closer look at our collection of Latin American Religious
Icons as well as The Journey of Pots, highlights from our ceramic collection
and the techniques used to create them.
