The Cupping Room: A collection of cups by leading artists donated to the museum by Garth Clark and Mark Del Vecchio

On Thursday evening, February 1, 2007, from 5:30 to 8 pm the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts will host an opening reception for a group of new exhibits. The reception will include refreshments and musical entertainment in the "Cupping Room." There is no charge and the public is invited to attend.

The Cupping Room features a recent gift to the museum, a collection of over 50 cups. These contemporary ceramic pieces range from the simple, useful variety to non functional cups of great imagination. The gift came from Garth Clark and Mark Del Vecchio, owners of the Garth Clark Gallery in New York, America's leading gallery of the ceramic arts. Furthermore, Garth Clark is the preeminent authority on modern and contemporary ceramic art. He is the author, editor and contributor to twenty-three books and over one hundred monographs, essays and catalogs. Both Garth Clark and Mark Del Vecchio have been wonderful supporters of the museum's ceramic collection, and this is the second time they've given a major collection to the museum. In 1999 they also presented the museum with 16 outstanding examples of contemporary American ceramics. Top left corner, Phillip Maberry, Homage to Beatrice Wood, above right, Akio Takamori, Cup

The name of the exhibit takes its inspiration from a famous café in New York's Soho district, which is frequented by many artists. The museum plans to create its own café and install it in the gallery. The coffee bar, complete with café tables and sofas, will feature DeCoty coffee served at the opening.
