18th San Angelo National Ceramic Competition

MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS ANNOUNCES ITS
18TH SAN ANGELO NATIONAL CERAMIC COMPETITION

Exhibition Dates: April 16 – June 20, 2010

The San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts is pleased to announce the Opening Reception of the Eighteenth San Angelo National Ceramic Competition on Friday, April 16, 2010 from 6 to 9 pm at the museum. The National Ceramic Competition is a juried exhibit that features work from leading ceramic artists as well as undiscovered new talent from across the nation, Canada and Mexico. The San Angelo Museum Endowment for Ceramic Events sponsors the event with additional support provided by Darlene and John Williams of Dallas, Trinity Ceramic Supply, Inc.,  Angelo State University and The Old Chicken Farm Art Center.  In addition to the opening at the Art Museum a series of other events will take place in nearby locations, with a shuttle bus available to transport visitors around.

The national ceramic competition, a tradition in San Angelo, has been a cooperative event encompassing the art museum, the Art Department at Angelo State University and the Old Chicken Farm Art Center. April 16 and 17 are two days that are packed with ceramic art events held at all 3 locations, including a ceramic symposium at Angelo State University and a day long workshop with Invited Artist Susan Beiner at the Old Chicken Farm Art Center.

The juror for the 2010 competition is Sherman Hall, Editor of Ceramics Monthly and Co-Host of CeramicsArtsDaily.org. Hall majored in ceramics in college, graduating with a B.F.A. from Ohio State University in 1996. He ran an independent ceramic studio for several years before being hired as Assistant Editor at Ceramics Monthly, the world’s largest ceramic-art magazine, in 1999. Initially, he continued to run his studio as well, but eventually decided to close, since he was not able to devote the time needed. He chose instead to concentrate on supporting the field of studio
ceramics from the other side of the studio door. In June 2003 he was promoted to be the editor of Ceramics Monthly.

Each competition a noted ceramic artist is asked to display a small focus exhibit, which highlights the artist’s work, within the larger competition. This year the museum is delighted to have ceramic artist Susan Beiner as the Invited Artist. Susan Beiner Received her MFA from The University of Michigan (1993), and BFA from Rutgers University in New Jersey (1985).  Currently, she teaches at Arizona State University. She has exhibited both nationally and internationally and has received numerous awards and residencies.

San Angelo’s ‘Ceramics Weekend” begins Thursday afternoon, April 15, at 1 pm at the Old Chicken Farm Art Center with a workshop by clay artist Randy Brodnax. Art instructor at Cedar Valley College in Lancaster, TX, Randy has been leading workshops at San Angelo’s ceramic weekend for many years and this year he will once again lead participants in the building of a wood fired salt kiln and a Texas Glow Worm fiber kiln. All those taking part in the workshop will cut, weld, fabricate and fire the kilns. The workshop will begin on Thursday and continue on Friday with a grand kiln opening on Saturday. The fee for the workshop is $25.00 per person.

Early Friday morning at 9 a.m. a ceramic workshop by Vorakit Chinookoswong, also known as V. Chinn, will be held at the Angelo State University Ceramics Facility located at the Fine Arts Museum. Chinn was born in Thailand, learned his art in Japan studying and working under master potters, then moved to Seabrook, Texas in 1980 where he still lives and works. There is no charge for the workshop, which will run till 11 a.m.

Later that day, Friday’s activities continue with the Twenty-Fifth Annual Ceramic Symposium which is held from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Carr Education-Fine Arts building on the campus of Angelo State University. The Ceramic Symposium is co-sponsored by Angelo State University, Trinity Ceramic Supply, Inc., the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, and The Old Chicken Farm Art Center. Serving as Symposium Coordinator is Esteban Apodaca, Assistant Professor of Art in Ceramics at Angelo State University. Panelists for the Symposium will be the Juror Sherman Hall and the Invited Artist Susan Beiner. Howard Taylor, Director of the Fine Arts Museum, will serve as moderator. The first part of the Symposium will focus on the invited artist showing slides and speaking on her work and the juror talking about the selections of the exhibit. After a break for refreshments, the final session will be an open forum with the audience.

Friday culminates with the Opening Reception of the 18th San Angelo National Ceramic Competition at the Museum of Fine Arts, One Love Street from 6 to 9 p.m. Both the competition juror Sherman Hall and the Invited Artist Susan Beiner will be present at the Opening and the competition awards will be announced. Numerous other artists who are participants in the exhibit will also be on hand to meet the public and converse about their work. Refreshments and music will be provided. There is no charge for the opening and the public is invited to attend. Works will be on sale the night of the opening and throughout the length of the exhibition. The ceramic exhibition will be on display through June 20th.

Downtown San Angelo will be abuzz with activity for in addition to the art museum opening April’s Artwalk will be held on Friday night instead of the usual Thursday, to coincide with the ceramic competition. Many shops and galleries will hold special ceramic exhibits including Bonnie Beesley’s Art and Rug Gallery located at 221 S. Chadbourne. The work of a variety of ceramic artists including Shikha Gupta, Bridget Hauser, Mark Epstein, and Amanda Jaffe as well as assemblage and collage artist Cindy Kelly will be featured in an exhibit titled, Ceramic Celebration. And in the Coop Gallery on Oakes Street, the Texas Clay Arts Association will hold  their annual Member’s Show  titled, The 6-Pack Show.

To round out the evening and to offer a change of pace from ceramics, The Texas Mesquite Association will be holding a San Angelo Mesquite Art Festival in the Fort Concho Quartermaster Galleries located on the corner of Avenue C and Flipper Street. Over 40 artisans from across Texas will be showcasing their work in mesquite wood at this event.

On Friday evening from 7 to 9:30 p.m. a shuttle bus that stops at all venues at approximately 10 minute intervals will connect all of the opening events, which will enable those attending to leave their cars parked and be transported to and from all locations.

For more information on any of these events call the Art Museum at 325-653-3333.

Ceramics Weekend continues on Saturday, April 17, at the Old Chicken Farm Art Center located at 2505 Martin Luther King Boulevard. From 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. a demonstration ceramic workshop will be conducted by Invited Artist Susan Beiner. The all-day workshop fee is $45 ($25 for full time students with valid ID). For lunch, participants either bring a sack lunch or patronize one of the local restaurants.

More ceramic openings can be found on Saturday evening at the Old Chicken Farm Art Center.  Roger Allen’s Starkeeper Gallery will feature ceramic work by a variety of artists while Studio One Gallery will feature works by Jim Bob Salazar of Alpine, Texas and Gary Huntoon and Angela Gallia form Dallas, while in Studio 5 new work by owners Millicent Frost and Jeremy Bundick will be on display.  The work of  ceramic artist Katherine Taylor, one of the accepted artists in the 18th San Angelo National ceramic Competition, will be featured in gallery Art6Degrees  and numerous studios of other Chicken Farm artists will also be open

On Saturday evening guests, visitors and participants can all partake of the Texas Barbecue Dinner, a long standing tradition of the Ceramics Weekend. The Barbecue Dinner starts at 7 p.m. and costs $15 per person. Throughout the evening there will be artists demonstrating raku and ceramic techniques. Musical entertainment will also be on hand.

The final event of the 18th San Angelo National Ceramic Competition takes place on Monday, April 19 at the art museum with Roger Allen, Director of the Old Chicken Farm Art Center. Roger will lead a Walk-Talk through the galleries, commenting on the different styles of work in the exhibit. This event is free and the public is invited. It begins at 12 Noon.

The Eighteenth San Angelo National Ceramics Competition will continue on display through June 20, 2010. Information on all events can be obtained by calling the museum at 325-653-3333.

The San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for senior citizens. Students from Angelo State University and the San Angelo school district are admitted free as well as museum members and active military personnel.

The museum is supported by generous contributions from both individuals and businesses. This project is partially supported by funds from the San Angelo Cultural Affairs Council, the City of San Angelo, the Texas Commission on the Arts, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
