The San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts is becoming known for its collection of contemporary American ceramics and every year brings new additions. Through the generosity of numerous donors this past spring, a wonderful assortment of ceramic art was given to the Museum.
One of Austin artist Bonnie Lynch's vessels was purchased from Shoal Creek Gallery in Austin and offered as a gift to the Museum by Marilyn Bellows. The beautiful austere shape of Lynch's artwork is a wonderful addition to the Museum's collection.
This year's ceramic exhibits in April were also the source
of new pieces for the Museum. "Different Directions: Coming Together
in Clay" included the work of 6 artists: Gail Busch and Louis Katz
from Corpus Christi, Texas; Robert Farmer and Hasuyo Miller from Temecula,
California; and Suze Lindsay and Kent McLaughlin from Bakersville, North
Carolina. One work from each of these artists is now part of the Museum's
collection.
Louis
Katz' Cracked Recumbant Bowl (pictured left) and Gail Busch's
Venetia were purchased for the Museum by Mrs. Fern Katz, and a ceramic
sculpture by artist Robert Farmer was given to the Museum by the Concho
Atlantic Alliance, a local organization of gentlemen of esteemed character
and fine taste.
The Museum's sponsor of the ceramic exhibit, John and Darlene Williams, who have purchased numerous pieces for the Museum from past ceramic shows, once again provided funds for the Museum to purchase Vase by Kent McLaughlin; Pitcher and Four Tumblers by Suze Lindsay; and Story Teller by Hasuyo Miller. In addition, the Williamses contributed towards the purchase of Danville Chadbourne's ceramic sculpture titled The Fortuitous Myth of the Unpredictable Icon, (pictured right) which is now on display on the Museum 's rooftop terrace.
Recently the Museum was also awarded a gift of $800 for the
purchase of ceramics from the 2007 "Art of the Pot Tour" in Austin,
Texas. This tour, which has become an annual event on Mother's Day weekend,
features the work of 5 well-known Austin ceramic artists as well as a group
of invited artists from across the country. This year's tour and sale took
place on May 12th and 13th and was attended by Museum Collections Manager
Karen Zimmerly and Preparator John Mattson. They were able to purchase 7
works for the Museum from the artists Kowkie Durst of Portland, OR;
Bill
Griffith of Sevierville, TN; Marian Haigh of Austin, TX; Nicholas Joerling,
Penland, NC, Diana Kersey (pictured left), San Antonio, TX; Lorna
Meaden, Durango, CO; and Kari Radasch, Westbrook, ME.
