Multiplicity: Contemporary Ceramic Sculpture presents sculpture by eight U.S.-based artists who create large-scaled works through the use of the repetition of small scale cast clay forms. Repetition is an effective formal device in visual art. The balance of geometry and the predictability of pattern are visually pleasing. Furthermore, the work in Multiplicty is part of a lineage of installation art that began in the 1970s because they activate space and are large enough to incorporate the viewer. In addition, these artworks draw upon a much older history, one connected to the ceramic vessels of the early twentieth century, which were produced in multiples, designed with consideration and finished by hand.
Six of the eight artists included in this exhibit trained as ceramicists, two studied sculpture, and most of them have graduate degrees. The nine pieces included in this exhibit range from hanging pieces to those on pedestals; floor pieces and wall pieces. Half of the work is rooted in abstraction while the other four decidedly refer to representational imagery. The artists in Multiplicity represent geographic diversity within the U.S. as well. Three live on the West coast, four reside on the East coast and one is a resident of the Rocky Mount West. The artists include Shawn Busse, Marek Cecula, Bean Finneran, Kay Hwang, Denise Pelletier, Jeanne Quinn, Gregory Roberts, and Juana Valdes. Multiplicity: Contemporary Ceramic Sculpture was organized by the Stanlee and Gerald Rubin Gallery at the University of Texas at El Paso. The exhibit was co-curated by Kate Bonansinga and Vincent Burke. Pictured top left Marek Cecula, Interface Set IV and below Bean Finneran, Red Core.
