The museum is fortunate to have several hundred volunteers assisting with various programs and also has the support and direct involvement of many area educators including the people shown here.

The San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts operates one of the most extensive art education programs for its' size of any museum in the nation. It was primarily for this reason that we received the National Museum Service Award, which has been given to only 32 other museums in America and was presented at the White House by Laura Bush in January 2003.

Although the museum does provide numerous programs for adults, we have placed heavy emphasis on children's programs. This is because our community is relatively remote and art and cultural opportunities for children are very limited.

We collaborate with more than a dozen organizations in our community and directly and extensively with the San Angelo Independent School District, the offices of Region IX and local school districts up to 100 miles away. With the SAISD and other public schools, we are keenly aware of their need for all education experiences to tie in directly with state mandates and testing standards.

The museum is in a period of intensive planning and exploring even broader education initiatives. Included in this is a federally funded planning project with SAISD and the Upper Colorado River Authority on a combined science and art program for students. In addition, the museum purchased and renovated dilapidated buildings on Oakes Street to increase our educational activity space.

We frequently host large scale free public events such as our monthly Family Days sponsored by Ethicon in which we focus on a different culture each month. Hands on art activities, music, cooking, and cultural demonstrations are highlights. All events are free and exhibit galleries are open.

Currently the museum is impacting over 85,000 people annually through visitation, on-site and outreach programs. The museum provides an amazing 4,000 hours of service annually to the community.
